Google’s Penguin War on Directories Gathers Pace

Feb 25, 2013   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   Marketing Posts, SEO Posts, Web Design Posts  //  1 Comment
penguin

About mid-way through last year Google began delisting directories from search results stating that the reasoning behind this was that many had no quality content. This was initially aimed at directory sites that exist purely to provide backlinks whether paid or free. Everyone knows that getting links to your website is how to gain authority and increase PageRank. This is very true, but for some time now, poor quality and low value links from directories have been ignored and the directory site has been removed from the Google index. We keep a list of just under 400 directories for monitoring purposes and in recent months quite a few have disappeared from SERPs, some have reappeared, mainly those that changed the way they attempt to pass on ‘juice’ on by using rel=”nofollow” according to the webmaster guidelines. It seems that if you use the nofollow option, you are an actual directory serving the community, possibly a specific industry or niche. For example, Nuoret was a PageRank 5 directory last year but today it has PageRank of zero and has been delisted by Google altogether. This is one example of about 60 that we have seen delisted.

The All New Sovereign Business Transfer Website

Jun 29, 2012   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   Hosting Posts, Marketing Posts, Web Design Posts  //  No Comments

sovereign-business-transfer-ssSovereign Business Transfer is the UK’s fastest growing business sales broker based up north in Manchester and the owner, Matthew Trinder, was after a complete redesign of their old Joomla website and wanted the new one to be fresh looking and dynamic as a reflection of the company. The site has a large MySQL database of businesses for sale with loads of PHP-tech to handle calls to the database for search queries and filtering so a potential customer gets accurate results delivered. The important criteria was that despite the complexity of the backend, the content management system had to be relatively simple to use when editing, adding and updating new businesses… Read more >>

New Website Cookie Law Is Now In Force

Jun 22, 2012   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   Blogging Posts, Marketing Posts, Mobile Web Posts, Social Media, Web Design Posts, Website Law  //  No Comments

cookies and the lawAs of this month any public website should provide information about its use of cookies and give the option to disable them, not just a document stashed away somewhere, but on the homepage as the first thing a visitor sees! The cookie law was actually passed last year, but we were all given 12 months to sort ourselves out. Now that time is up, we’ll have to comply. In case you don’t know, cookies are small parcels of technical data that track our movements and browsing habits when we use the internet, or store items in a shopping cart for future purchase. Some websites use these cookies to offer us targeted products similar to those we have been looking at. I’m sure we have all wondered how that little window pops up and offers us a deal on the very same products we were looking at only a few days ago! This is done by using cookies for advertising. How does Amazon or eBay remind you what you ‘last viewed’? By using cookies of course. As with everything, the use of cookies has been abused by the unscrupulous advertising and tracking markets and forced the EU to act on it. Read more >>

Destiny Driving School Aylesbury

Apr 3, 2012   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   Hosting Posts, Logo Design, Web Design Posts  //  No Comments

destiny-driving-school-aylesburyWhen it comes to your website, always read the small print! Aylesbury based Destiny Driving School had a website built and hosted by yellsites which, it turns out according to the terms and conditions, didn’t belong to them nor did the domain name even after paying a substantial fee for the whole project. Fiona came to us after a content managed website to replace the old one which she could develop herself. We built Destiny a WordPress CMS website which they can add to and edit as much as they want, creating keyword opportunities in the process and climbing the their way up the SERPs (search engine results pages). For some of the keywords targetted, the site has moved up 80 positions in the first 2 weeks and that is with a new domain name so effectively starting from scratch. Fiona is a grade 6 instructor, the highest qualificaion possible, so if you are after driving lessons in Buckinghamshire, you would do well to give Destiny Driving School a call.

The Responsive Mobile Website Revolution

Feb 26, 2012   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   Marketing Posts, Mobile Web Posts, Web Design Posts  //  1 Comment

mobile-devicesThe mobile device revolution has started … are you ready? Is your business taking advantage? Is your website ‘responsive’?

So, is your website responsive and mobile-ready? According to recent research less than 19% of the world’s top 500,000 web sites are mobile-ready and that means you may already be losing business to those competitors who have already embraced this trend. Have you checked your web analytics recently? You’ll be amazed how your website traffic is increasingly being generated by mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, BlackBerrys, Androids and other types of smartphone or tablet devices. In fact, by providing a satisfactory mobile experience, companies pave the way for clients to go on to purchase. A ForeSee Results’ survey found those who are satisfied with a mobile experience are 32% more likely to go on to purchase from that company online and 31% more likely to buy offline. It is also estimated that by 2013 more people will access internet using mobile devices than computers. So you could be losing potential customers if your website doesn’t provide a great user experience on a smartphone or tablet.

Making a decision to ensure your web site is mobile and m-commerce ready will ensure your customers can engage with you no matter what platform they use. Going mobile ready does mean business!

Making it happen for you:

Making A Good First Impression Online

Feb 20, 2012   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   Blogging Posts, SEO Posts, Web Design Posts  //  1 Comment

web-first-impressionsIt always amazes us here at oneweb just how many websites have homepages that are so cluttered you can’t immediately see the content and struggle to gauge what the site is actually about. At first glance you are bombarded with adverts, banners and some text you daren’t hover over for fear of opening another ad box. Website owners are so desperate to get their keywords in, they forget all about the first impression they are giving new visitors. Thankfully, within the latest algorithm update, Google has put in place the incentive for websites to tidy themselves up and produce quality content. The algorithm acts as a quality filter by penalising websites with undesirable clutter and top heavy advertising. Phew.. We thought it was a good time to put together a reminder of the basic ‘First Impression Rules’ that should govern how you layout your homepages and/or landing pages.

Your website is very often the first time a potential customer comes across your business. In less than 60 seconds they will have asked themselves:

  • Have I arrived at the right place?
  • Is this a credible, professional company?
  • Does this website make me feel comfortable?
  • Does this website offer what I am searching for and can I trust it?
  • Do I feel welcome?

You may think that design is not the most important factor in a website and that functionality plays a far more important role, but it’s design that’s responsible for making that good first impression every time. Read more >>

PChelp4U & their new website by oneweb

Dec 1, 2011   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   SEO Posts, Social Media, Web Design Posts  //  1 Comment

PChelp4U-screenshotWe are delighted to announce our new association with the Oxfordshire / Buckinghamshire based I.T. support company PChelp4U. The company’s owner approached us to design a unique looking website to replace their previous site, not as an upgrade, but completely starting from scratch, we were obviously happy to take on the project. The brief was to create something unique looking using vivid colours but without being too outlandish. Hmmm, tough one that… Over to the graphic design guys then. The end result of the site is definately unique but looks amazing. It has a landing-page with a grid system of homeboxes that are colour co-ordinated to the pages below them. Built with PHP, it has slideshows, contact forms, a news blog and plenty of social network integration. Oh, and of course a section dedicated to PChelp4U’s latest offering, web design by oneweb. Here’s to a long and successful relationship between PChelp4U and oneweb. The site is available at: pc-help-4u.co.uk

Using Social Media For Success Online

May 13, 2011   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   Marketing Posts, SEO Posts, Web Design Posts  //  1 Comment

Welcome to Part 2 of our tips & tricks mini-tutorials. This time it’s about inbound marketing and social media.

With inbound marketing we are taking advantage of the way people want to communicate today. We all search for products and services everyday but are we able to find you or your competition? Search engines deal with hundreds of millions of searches per day. We read blogs and tap our social networks to find answers to questions, solutions and product recommendations. Inbound marketing is about making it easy for people to find what you have to offer online. There are 4 distinct stages to successful inbound marketing: create quality content, optimize the content for search engines AND humans, promote it strategically then analyze the results.

Business Social NetworkingContent Creation for Social Networking in Business
Content can come in hundreds of guises. It can be blogs, e-books, white papers, video and photos, advice or tutorials like this. At oneweb we produce tons of content, for this site and others, that’s how we aim to keep your interest in our services and products. When you’re creating a lot of content try to publish on various channels, making sure you optimize for those different channels. Just to illustrate the importance of content creation, here is a piece of data. Companies that blog generate 55 percent more visitor traffic. You may well ask, why is that? Blogging allows you to talk about topics that are more appealing to people and allows you to make more interesting correlations. You can use long tailed keywords, you can attract more inbound links and you can use the comments section to generate conversations. Your blog helps you become more interesting on social media as well. Take the content that you create on your blog and you share it on Facebook, Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon and other networks. The way we at oneweb transform our blog readers into leads is by using ‘calls to action’ at the end of each of our blog posts. You’ll notice that this blog post has a three ‘calls to action’ inviting you to contact us, comment on the post and/or share the post with your social network thereby generating leads and hopefully new business opportunities.

Google logoOptimizing Your Content
The second step in our inbound marketing methodology is optimizing your content. Optimization really includes two elements: on-page optimization and off-page optimization. On-page search engine optimization (SEO) refers to the elements on your site such as page title, meta tags, descriptions, and alt tags. Off-page SEO refers to the ‘authority’ of your website, measured by the number of inbound links you can accumulate, this will elevate you in the eyes of search engines and place you higher on the results pages. If you want to get deeper in to this, you can look at the different SEO elements on your page. They need to be consistent: the same keywords should be present in the page title, the URL, and the description. If you are curious about how your website is performing, if you have all those elements and if they’re working, oneweb offers services in validation, error checking and fixing, usability testing and SEO reporting, contact us for more details.

facebook logoContent Promotion
The third part of our inbound marketing methodology is promoting your content. Once you start creating really valuable and remarkable content, you need to find ways to share it. It’s no coincidence that some our clients’ companies that blog and manipulate social media have increased visitor traffic by up to 79 percent. If you have something meaningful to write about on your blog, you will be more interesting on social networks. Use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg and Delicious. Get them working for you. So where should YOU share your content? What channels should YOU utilize? You will need to experiment with this part because it differs from site to site. A few general methods that everyone can use are:

  • Invite readers to “Like” your post on Facebook. Provide a button in your e-books, blog posts & emails.
  • Offer the option for readers to retweet your content.
  • Maximize the traction you are getting from email marketing by testing different subject lines.
  • Allow comments. You may get a load of spam but actual visitor comments are invaluable and give you an idea of how you are doing.

Social NetworksAnalyzing Results
Creating content, optimizing it and promoting it is all very well, but in order to improve results and drive success, you will need to be constantly measuring results. To do that, you need to track not only the number of visits you’re getting, but also the number of leads. There are many tools out there to help you track and analyze visitors and data. The most comprehensive are provided by Google and are generally free to use. At oneweb all of our websites come with monthly visitor statistics reports for you to see what’s working and what isn’t. Get in touch with us today and find out what oneweb can do for your business online.

Remember, get the most out your website by manipulating social media networks and steer those inbound links to your content!

Get blogging and start #winning

May 11, 2011   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   Graphic Design Posts, Web Design Posts  //  No Comments

Hey guys. This is part 1 of our ongoing tips & tricks tutorials about #winning online. oneweb can offer sound advice, drawn from years of online experience, and we love to pass this information on to you guys. Here are some valuable tips for blogging.

The first one is that the title should be keyword rich. You want to use good keywords – keywords that your readers are searching for – in your titles. Most of the things we’ve seen and tested show that having an image in every article is good. It makes it more visually appealing. It gives people something to gravitate towards rather than just a whole bunch of text on the page.

We would always recommend using both e-mail and RSS subscriptions. oneweb can build you an RSS facility to include in your site. There are also ways to do email subscriptions which we can help you with. When you publish a new blog article, it can automatically go to the people subscribing to the blog by e-mail. For us, about a third of our blog subscribers are by e-mail. Other sites have 70-80% of their blog readers subscribing by email. Some clients use RSS, some use email more, and you should have both of those available to make sure that you’re making it as easy as possible for people to get your blog content if they’re interested in it.

Blog The other thing that’s really important is leveraging calls to action in order to drive more traffic to your landing pages. It’s important to have a call to action in every article, and that’s basically a link to something where people can register, opt-in, start a trial, buy a product, something like that to get them moving down the sales and marketing process. I can tell you that by adding calls to action to our blog, we almost tripled the number of leads we were getting from it. People often ask us, how do I get more comments? Some of the great ways to do that: ask a question at the end of the article or be controversial. The more controversial you are, the more comments you will get. I know that from experience. Also, leave part of the issue untouched. If you completely cover a topic, you’re not really leaving room for people to add something to it.

If you need article ideas, check your sent items in your email. Most people, businesses and marketers are getting questions all day long from customers and potential customers about all sorts of things. Checking and seeing how you’ve answered those questions can be a great way to cover popular topics. You can also look at FAQs from your sales people. I also think it’s important engage the whole company and not dump all the blogging and content-creation responsibility on one person. How do you engage the whole company? We’ve tried a bunch of things here at oneweb and have quite a few different people who are writing for our blog. We do contests. We do public praise. We’ve certainly been able to gather a lot of support from our team. We’ve built it into some of the employee goals for a couple of different groups in the company.

Get everyone addicted to the process of blogging, the feedback and the positive loop that can happen by publishing an article. oneweb are here to help you. Blogging has become an essential component in the pursuit of online success. Contact us today for help, support, guidance, whatever you need really, and let us help you take your website to a whole new level.

Remember, the search engines are looking for ‘new and relevant content’ from you so give it to them!

The EDL website is launched

EDL screenshot
We are delighted to announce the launch of the all-new Enterprising Developments Ltd website. EDL are a firm of property developers based in Nottinghamshire and London. They specialise in period property renovation and new build developments. Their website needed to be image intensive to highlight renovations as before and after picture sets, for this we have utilised thumbnails and lightboxes to keep the server load down. It has worked very well and all at oneweb.co are delighted with the results. The site features an image slider running throughout, 3 PHP forms for capturing data of potential clients, several image galleries, a news blog section and my personal favourite, a 3 minute movie highlighting some of their favourite works. The site is fully scalable to add development projects as they come on stream with little touches like movies flowing and panning through rooms to give the viewer a feeling of actually being there. Thanks to EDL and good luck with the new project at Gloucester Place, London. We look forward to seeing the results. The site is available at edl-uk.com

The Bateman’s Mill Hotel

Nov 16, 2010   //   by Dave Hinxy   //   Web Design Posts  //  No Comments

batemansmillhotel.co.ukThe Bateman’s Mill Hotel in Chesterfield was opening under new management at the end of October 2010 and needed a great looking website ready for the launch day which was 2 weeks away! The oneweb.co team worked hard to produce this stunning looking site and delivered the goods at 11pm the night before it was due to launch. A job well done to the team. The brief was to produce a site to showcase the hotel’s newly refurbished guest rooms, bar and restaurant. It required a content management system for the hotel owners to upload and update menus themselves and a blog to announce special offers and forthcoming events. In addition to this was integration into the online booking systems and front desk software.
